Design
and Specification
DO
-
Define
your requirements in quantifiable terms – avoid loose terminology
such as “efficient”, “reliable”, “clean”
-
Specify
time scales precisely. When
will the contractor be able to start work, when do you require to
complete commissioning?
-
Refer
to standards that are accepted broadly within your industry or region.
-
Clearly
state the constraints within which the work must be conducted and all
the necessary interfaces with other supplies, contractors and your own
operations management.
-
Produce
outline layouts in AutoCad or DXF format for ease of distribution –
freehand sketches are NEVER sufficient.
-
Consult
as widely as possible with your in-house team.
Avoid the “I could have told you that would not work…”
syndrome.
-
Check
that your specification is achievable, affordable and within the
bounds of current knowledge – a separate Feasibility Study may be
needed.
