Engineering Projects

Many small engineering projects involve simply “like-for like” replacement of individual plant items and can be handled routinely by local engineers without difficulty.

Problems tend to arise when:

  • The scope of work is large or complex and involves several contractors and suppliers.

  • Major alterations to services infrastructure
    are required.

  • Space constraints and layout are significant
    to material flow and operating
    performance.

  • The plant contains elements that are novel or bespoke and there is a technical performance risk.

  • The impact on continuing operations is significant (a “mini-relocation”)

Most of the projects upon which we assist have one or more of these characteristics.  We also work on projects that are seen as high-risk or embody significant process innovation and we have developed particular strategies for managing these. Whatever the task, the fundamental project management processes remain unchanged

Individual clients are often unaware of alternative suppliers and our experience can be useful in bringing higher levels of price competition into the tender process.

The success of a typical engineering project is often determined by the amount of work that has been done in the initial (pre-contract) stages.  We are frequently asked to help clients to recover from situations that need not have arisen had more attention been given to the project at the outset.

The management of project risk is another area that is frequently overlooked.  Techniques are available to identify high-risk elements and ensure that these receive an appropriate level of management.  Sound engineering skills and commercial awareness must be combined to develop the right approach.
